2 thoughts on “American Exceptionalism – Giving Thanks…

  1. Nobody can argue that by nature of its history and development, America is unique and exceptional. But the claim that this exceptionalism endows the nation with a certain unqualified advantage over others, fails to take the context of development into account.

America is a relatively new nation, and is in a different stage of development than say, England or Italy or China, etc. Nations, like people, experience various stages of development – they’re born, develop, prosper, and decline. You attribute American prosperity solely to its unique characteristics. But in doing so, you’re comparing an adolescent to a retiree. I don’t dispute the substantive basis of your argument. That said, I think you’re overlooking the fact that as the global climate shifts and America enters a stage of maturity and (hopefully not for a long time) decline, America’s “blessed advantages” over other nations may start to dissipate, despite its unique history and development.

  2. Yelena: It seems bizarre to claim that “nations are just like people in terms of a ‘life cycle.'” This is obviously not necessarily true and you give no argument why anyone should believe the premise.

Figures/numbers would make the original post more compelling! Happy belated Thanksgiving.
