Lights Out!

Duffield blackout. Number of engineers expected to sleep overnight in 'comfy chairs' expected to rise

Everyone on the engineering quad just got a lot more attractive.  There’s a power outage at Cornell!

Many buildings are on backup systems right now, from Duffield Hall on the engineering quad to all of west campus housing! The main engineering building, Duffield, went onto backup power around 10:30 PM this evening.  At this point, the entire engineering quad, powerless, has disappeared into the night.  It’s not apparent what caused the outage yet.

UPDATE: Cornell’s web servers are down as well. Cornell.edu and all associated Cornell websites are unable to be accessed – unapparent if this is related.  Yes, that means Blackboard, too.  Perhaps Cornellians will be enjoying assignment extensions now that online classroom materials are inaccessible…

A Cornell Police officer on the engineering quad told the Cornell Review that electricians were on the scene at 11:30 PM and were trying to resolve the problem.

What remains to be answered, however, is why the University does not have an established backup means to provide power to keep the school’s servers up.  Cornell email and websites have been unresponsive since around 10:30 PM this evening.
