2024 in Review: Passing the Torch to New Administrators

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has generally supported viewing graduate students as employees with rights to form unions. As of July 2023, there were at least 156 active graduate student unions in the U.S. Also, currently, U.S. colleges have 775 faculty bargaining unions in public sector and private sector institutions of higher education. Unionization at private colleges are subject to the NLRB, and public colleges are governed by state labor relations authorities, such as the PERB in New York State. To date, there has been no public move to unionize Cornell’s faculty.
Cornell has been fiscally tied to the Federal Government since its very founding. Accordingly, Cornell devoted resources to managing this vital relationship.
Looking through Tuesday’s election data, it is clear that Tompkins County, home to Cornell, is the bluest of the blue in a state that showed a higher-than-expected Republican turnout. We are living in a political bubble that does not align with New York State or the rest of the nation, and Tuesday’s vote brought that reality home
On November 11, John Ondrasik and Patricia Heaton will speak and perform in Bailey Hall at 7 PM.
On September 30, Abby Johnson spoke at Cornell at the invitation of the Young America’s Foundation and the Cornell Republicans. Her talk was entitled “Abortion is Murder.” Johnson had worked at an abortion clinic until October 6, 2009.
Long-time Ithaca Realtor Lindsay Lustick Garner is conducting a write-in campaign for the NY Assembly against Anna Kelles.
On October 30, the Cornell Committee on Expressive Activity issued a draft of its Final Report. The campus is asked to submit comments and or to participate in a December 3 town hall meeting.
