On October 2, 2024, Mr. Daryl Davis spoke at Landis Auditorium located in Myron Taylor Hall. Mr. Davis’ talk, entitled, “Fighting Racism with Free Speech” was sponsored by The Cornell Political Union, The Braver Angels, The Heterodox Academy, Freedom and Free Speech Society, The Afrikaans Society, and The Triad Foundation.
CML and BSU have been playing the race card in recent weeks after a stream of events that have invoked attention by Cornell’s administration.
Cornell’s Black Student Union (BSU) has reformulated its demands and included the firing of Joel Malina, the Vice President for University Relations. This demand is based upon a Sept. 30 town hall Zoom meeting with Hillel parents.
Each year, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) conducts a survey of college students about their campus’ free speech climate. FIRE then adjusts these scores to reflect past episodes where each college “canceled” or “disinvited” speakers, as well as an evaluation of the college’s free speech policies.
On October 1, 2024, the University Assembly (UA) met in the Physical Sciences Building. The UA is the shared governance body that includes voting members who are undergraduate, graduate and professional students, faculty and staff.
