Pollack began the announcement by reaffirming Cornell’s commitment to the “twin freedoms” of academic freedom and freedom of expression. Both, Pollack said, are foundational to Cornell’s identity and values.
Pollack has rejected SA Res. 31., for it “would infringe on our core commitment to academic freedom and freedom of inquiry, and [its requirements] are at odds with the goals of a Cornell education.”
In response to a proposed SA resolution mandating “trigger warnings,” the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression wrote to President Pollack to express disapproval.
Though the clearest target of the protestors was defense contractors, such as Lockheed Martin, much of the advertising of the event included references to Israel.
