BREAKING: All Frat Events at Cornell Suspended for the Remainder of 2026-27
At 12:33pm on Tuesday, October 13th, Cornell University President Michael I. Kotlikoff put out a statement to all members of the Cornell Community containing the following:
“All parties and social events in Interfraternity Council (IFC) houses at Cornell will be suspended for the remainder of the 2026-2027 academic year. These measures will provide time for a thorough review of fraternity life at Cornell to determine whether and how it can safely continue.
There will be zero tolerance for violations of this directive. Any fraternity holding an in-house party or social event will receive an immediate emergency suspension.
We will immediately engage students and faculty experts in the development of safe social alternatives and invest university resources in their establishment.”
This follows the extensive coverage of the 2024 Chi Phi Incident, which the Daily Sun has spearheaded.
Kotlikoff finished the email with words of hope:
“These are first steps toward systemic change on our campus. We will take all necessary steps to address the conditions that led to Jane Doe’s experiences, and those of other survivors. Cornell must be a place where safety is not an open question. I am committed to doing that work, and to seeing it through. It will take all of us working together, however, to build a Cornell culture of community, trust, and respect.”
Whether banning all frat events will lead to this vision remains to be seen. It will also be interesting observing whether frat-like houses outside the IFC are sanctioned as well, as they often hold very popular events (such as the Rowing House, a private residence unaffiliated with Cornell).
Unaffiliated houses and private residences may become much more popular in the absence of their competition.
Greek life has been a staple on holidays such as Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day, with hordes of freshmen leaving North Campus to attend the “halloweekend” parties and countless pre-games with Borgs for St. Patrick’s Day.
The official website for Cornell fraternities contains the following quote:
“Andrew Dickson White, co-founder and first president of Cornell, didn’t believe in dormitories. The best place for a student to live was a fraternity — “the best substitute possible for the family relation.” Explore Cornell’s IFC fraternities and find your home.”
