On Tuesday, September 10, Kenneth Atsenhaienton Deer, founder and former editor of The Eastern Door newspaper, will deliver the 2024 Daniel W. Kops Freedom of the Press Lecture, Deer’s topic will be “The Eastern Door: A Newspaper Born out of Crisis,” and the talk will begin at 5 p.m. in Lewis Auditorium of Goldwin Smith Hall, Room G76. Unlike past years, there will not be any livestream or official recording of the talk.
On September 2, 2024, UAW Local 2300 approved a settlement that ended the dining, maintenance, grounds, and janitorial worker strike that started on August 18.
On August 27, the United Auto Workers (UAW), who represents 1,200 dining, grounds, janitorial, and animal care workers, reached a settlement of their strike against Cornell University. Union members will ratify the proposed settlement by a vote held on Sunday September 1 and Monday, Sept 2, with the goal of returning to work on Tuesday, September 3.
“[A]dministrative actions must be consistent and content neutral. In furtherance of institutional neutrality and deference to the many and diverse views in the Cornell community, the President and Provost will refrain from opining on national or global events that do not directly impact the university.”
On August 28, Cornell and the United Auto Workers (UAW) reached a tentative settlement of their dispute. The agreement will be put to a ratification vote by dining, custodian, grounds and maintenance workers on September 1 and 2 with the goal of resuming work on Tuesday, September 3.
On Monday, August 26, the first day of classes brought graffiti and a smashed glass door on Day Hall, marking the return of Gaza-related protests to the new academic year. These disruptions were joined with a week of marching and protests by the United Auto Workers (UAW) who are striking against Cornell.
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics have wrapped up with an estimated $3.08 billion economic impact. The games not only boosted the French economy, but the Cornell athletic tradition as well.
